Practically all other ferns require a good deal of humidity, but this elegant and vigorous example does not and so thrives indoors. The unusual creeping rhizome, rather like a rabbit’s or hare’s foot, which grows over the edge of the pot, is the main feature of the plant.
These brown rhizomes, which are covered with white-tipped hairs, can extend to 3ft/90cm, and if several of them are placed in a hanging basket or in a pot on a high window ledge, they will in time take on an almost spiderlike appearance.                  cyperus2balternifolius2bindoor2bplant-7924070 Dark wiry stalks emerge from the rhizomes, and these produce light green, triangular, leathery fronds as much as 12in/30cm long. Plants lose and then replace their leaves once a year.
If the fronds turn brown or become sparse, the conditions are too hot or dry. Raise the humidity level around the plant and water it more regularly.
Aphids and scale insects tend to attack this plant; check frequently for signs of infestation.                cyperus2balternifolius-3686140 FACT FILE
