This exotic plant gets its name from the fact that the ancient Egyptians used its stems for making papyrus to write on. It grows in clumps and the smooth triangular stems can reach a height of 10ft/3m. 
The thin, rich green, grassy leaves are topped by a few bracts and a dense, umbrellalike tuft of pendulous stems that end in tiny brownish flowers.
This is a marsh plant in its natural habitat, so it is almost impossible to give it too much water. It is not always easy to find, but the miniature Cyperus prolifer (C. isocladus), also known as C. papyrus ‘Nanus,’ which grows to 2ft/60cm, is usually easier to come by.

HEIGHT To 10ft/3m.
POTTING MIX Soil-based with charcoal added to keep the soil fresh.
REPOTTING Move into a pot one size larger as soon as the roots fill the current container.
PROPAGATION Divide the plant in spring or root stem cuttings in water.
KEEPING PLANTS Do not allow cyperus to dry out, even for a short while, or the bracts will develop brown tips.

- Full, bright sunlight or light shade.
- A minimum winter temperature of 55°F/13°C, with warm room temperature at other times.
- Keep the soil moist at all times: stand the pot in a bowl of water and keep it filled.
- Apply a weak liquid fertilizer once a month between spring and fall, or push fertilizing tablets into the soil around the roots.
