When they first appear, the leaves of this hardy palm are attractively plated and covered with fine hairs, but these fibers curl away from the edges of the leaves gradually open out into wide, deeply segmented fans. 
As the plant ages, a stout stem develops, covered with coarse brown fibers from decomposing leaf sheaths.
